Spices have been integral to Kerala's history. Vasco da Gama came to Kozhikode and returned to Portugal with a shipment of Indian spices. Cardamom, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, pepper, vanilla, ginger and turmeric are the main spices grown in the state which has taken to "spice tourism" on a mega scale.

Kerala Tourism has been conducting training programmes on spices to promote spice tourism as another unique product among the tourists.Spice tourism is of benefit to both the tourism industry as well as the tourists.The tourists get to visit spice farms and gardens and are provided knowledge on the different spices grown in the state, spice processing practices, grading methods, effective packaging,quality control methods,etc.

Anakkara Spice Tourism
Anakkara is nested in the sylvan hills of Western Ghats, and plantations forms an immense green carpet that sweeps over hills and valleys. The plantations have created an impressive profile for itself. The rich and varied flora, fauna and cultural heritage of this place are ideal and perfect. The expansive loamy plantations of coffee, tea, pepper and fragrant cardamom seen side-by-side with natural vegetation are primary attractions and exchange natural splendour. Of all the Spices of the East, none perhaps rivals the cardamom in aroma flavour, texture and use, and recognized internationally for it’s unparallel quality size and flavor. Anakkara Home Stay

Anakkara is an important spice cultivation centre, lies in between the famous tourism destinations Thekkady and Munnar. Anakkara welcome you to her expansive loamy plantations of fragrant  Cardamon, Coffee, and Pepper on her rolling hills. Average holding size of farmers is about 1 acre.  Farmers stay at their own farm houses. Homestays are arranged in the plantations of cardamom and pepper. There visitor can enjoy here serene, ideal and perfect atmosphere. Homestays give vast view of the suburbs which excel in scenic beauty and immense solace. Besides it provides healthy situations where the visitor can interact with the farmers,visitors can have first hand information on cultivation, harvesting and processing of spices.
